Day 32, Small Pause, "Passing Moments"

Today's Small Pause...

As I opened my front door today and looked up the hill, I was struck at how swiftly the clouds were moving across the sky. They moved along like a rapid slide show, changing continuously. At times there were patches of clear blue sky and cloud; while, other moments merged into a gray cloud mass. 

I thought it was a great metaphor to life. Life seems to move along swiftly by times, moving from sunny moments to gray ones. It maintains a continuous flow, where change is the only constant. Time pays no attention to our wishes. It marches on inevidentably. 

Thus, it is up to us to savor the moments of joy we experience, whether they be large or small. Be present with these times. Drink them in with your mind and spirit, because the memory of those times are what help us move through the gray clouds that pass through.

Day 21, Small Pause, "The Small Things"

Today's Small Pause...

32nd Anniversary, July 3rd, 2014

As my husband and I celebrate our 32nd Wedding Anniversary today, I reflect on the truth that small gestures help build relationships. A knowing smile, a touch, support by just being present; those are the building blocks that culminate over time. It is not the big moments, for they are infrequent. It is the small everyday happenings that weave together to build lasting ties. Whether in a partnership, friendship etc. the small things are what count over time. They are subtle and grow unknowingly, until one day you realize you have supported each other during your long journey together. 

On this special day my peonies decided to bloom. They bobbled within gusts of wind, just like our journey through life. I smiled, feeling grateful for love, beauty and for being awake to the "small things"!

Day 18, Small Pause, "Quiet"

Today's Small Pause...

Once again we have been greeted with stormy weather. Its gift is that it slows down the pace of life and allows time for rejuvenation. During a quiet time today I was reminded of how small items, scents or sounds can bring a sense of centeredness and comfort. 

As winds gust about and freezing rain pelts upon my window pane, I find comfort in feeling cozy inside. I am thankful to be safe in my home and protected from the outside elements.

A small candle fills the room with an apple, cinnamon scent. It is a memorable scent of homemade baking and family. 

I love watching its flickering light and how it glows within its glass encasement. A warm glow of orange dances about happily. Its dance is mesmerizing...its glow happy and warm.

Today's small pause reminded me of the truth, that even when life has brought challenges, little nuggets are woven within to bring relief. Quiet is the vehicle which allows their entry.

Day 17, Small Pause, "Curve Balls"

Today's Small Pause ...

When life throws you curve balls, it is within the storm you must find calm. I was reminded of this truth recently with my son's hospitalization.

Today nature exemplified this point as a winter storm whirled about outside. My winged friends sought refuge today as strong winds tossed them to and fro. They fought their way to our feeders taking small pauses to rest and feast. 

Within the storm, they found delight in a common routine. They took time to rest before they ventured back into the snowy air. Their rest stop provided sustenance to endure the driving snow and navigate challenging winds. Renewal was part of their plan in order to withstand stormy conditions. 

Nature always whispers truths... we just have to pay attention in order to hear her whispers.
